Personal Story

Emily Halper

Growing up on Long Island, Jewish tradition was an important part of Emily Halper’s life. At a local Reform synagogue, she attended Friday night services, Hebrew school, and youth programs, and celebrated milestones including her Bat Mitzvah and confirmation. A Birthright Israel trip during her college years at Long Island University further deepened her connection to Jewish identity.

When Emily came to Baltimore three years ago for a career change, she knew she wanted to get more involved in Jewish life. She discovered Etz Chaim after seeing a social media ad for Realities, and began an incredible journey of personal and professional growth. She appreciated the Realities program’s mix of technology and tradition, and enjoyed making new Jewish friends. “That blend of innovation and community is what makes Etz Chaim stand out,” Emily points out.

Emily is a regular at Cocktails and Conversations, where she comes for the “genuine, meaningful conversations” with diverse Jewish peers. On Friday nights, she enjoys celebrating Shabbat with her Etz Chaim friends.

My Jewish identity has always been a part of me,” says Emily, “but it wasn’t until I moved to Baltimore that I truly understood the depth of Jewish community. For someone new to the city like me, Etz Chaim has been a lifeline. It’s given me the chance to find incredible friendships and strengthen my Jewish identity. I encourage everyone in the community to explore Etz Chaim—it’s a place of connection, growth, and purpose.”
